The old thermal printers did not require ink or toner.

The disadvantage was that it required special paper. And eventually the termal printed paper would brown and the print would fade, making it a poor choice for any type of permanent record.

Laser printers use heat to 'set' the ink into place. If the thermal portion is not working properly, the ink smears right off the page.
