The biggest advantage to using a litter or gurney when transporting a victim is preventing further damage to the victim. If the victim has a spinal injury keeping him still is absolutely crucial to prevent permanent paralysis, that is if the injury is not a complete severing of the spinal nerves. Another major advantage is comfort of the victim and ease of working on the victim during vehicular transportation.
