Most thiefs use a program which tries all the common words to steal your password. A long password which contains numbers in it is not common, and is difficult to duplicate with such programs. Any password with more than seven letter-number combination, foreign words, and scrambled words are much more difficult than the standard six letter words.

This means a hacker would try to hack your user by puttin in passwords with your username like this, aaaaaa, aaaaaab, aaaaaac, to zzzzzzzz. or they will run a word list. normally running through a proxy to hide the activity.
Longer passwords make it harder to use this method, that's why places like iTunes making you put numbers in too. to make it even harder to brute force.
