If the battle occured on their land then they've got no farming land as it's mainly strewn with decomposing bodies, unexploded shells and landmines (they still find unexploded World War I shells in French fields today! 90 years later!), etc etc. Plus a lot of the labourers are dead and those left behind are traumatised. Think death, destruction and devastation.
