In the Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouting is open to all boys and is divided into three age groups:
- Boy Scouts of America Youth Application, 28-406
11-18 for Boy Scouts (10 with the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award or finished 5th grade). But then you can go to Sea Scouts 14-20. or Venture Scouts 14 to 20. Cub Scouts is 1st through 5th grade or 7 to 10 years old.
Scouts move to Boy Scouts in the middle of their 5th grade year or when 11 years old.
In the Boy Scouts of America, hunting is not an authorized activity for Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting. Venturers- who are ages 13 to 21 -may go hunting.
Cub Scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades, or 7 to 10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting, but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or Venturing program.

The Wolf Cub program was founded in England in 1916 by Robert Baden-Powell. Cub Scouting was formally launched in the US in 1930 by the BSA but did not have a single founder.

Usually during a Cub Scout's Bear year (3rd grade), he works on and earns his "Whittlin' Chip" which teaches him safe handling of a pocketknife and allows him to carry it at scouting events.
