There's a federal branch called the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada that is responsible for monitoring imported and exported goods going to and from Canada, and also for monitoring and reporting and reportable diseases that come up in both the livestock and crop sectors. Health Canada is another federal branch of the Canadian Government that is responsible for testing and monitoring not only food safety, but other things that are beneficial to the health of Canadians. (Health Canada was the body responsible for boycotting the use of antibiotics and growth hormones to be used in dairy cattle, for instance, because their research found that these additives had negative effects on people).
