Beavers are North America's largest rodent and they are built for life in the water.

Castor Canadensis can grow to be up to 4 feet long and weigh over 60 pounds. Beavers have webbed hind feet and large, flat, nearly hairless tail. They uses their tail to help maintain balance when gnawing on trees. They will also slap their tail against the water to signal danger or to warn away predators. Beavers have short front legs with very strong claws. Their rear legs are longer than the front one's. Webbed feet help propel the beaver through the water. When the beaver is under water, its nose and ears close up and a special membrane covers its eyes.

Beaver can be found throughout North America except for the far northern most parts of Canada, Florida, the desert Southwest and Mexico.

The beaver has many adaptations to assist it in its natural, semi-aquatic environment. Because of these adaptations, it is able to spend winter safely holed up in its lodge, even below a layer of ice, and away from predators.

  • It has a wide, flat tail which acts as a rudder while it is swimming. The tail also stores fat in preparation for winter. In summer, the tail releases excess heat from the beaver's body to help cool it down.
  • It is able to conserve oxygen, enabling it to stay underwater for long periods. Mammals cannot breathe underwater, but the beaver has enormous lungs, giving it greater capacity, and a huge liver which can store more oxidised blood. It also has slower circulation to its extremities.
  • The beaver is known for its ability to build a dam and a lodge. It is equipped with large, chisel-like teeth which never stop growing, so that it can cut down trees. Felling trees also serves another purpose: the beaver can then access the leaves and buds on the branches which it would otherwise be unable to reach.
  • It is able to eat underwater, because its lips can close behind its front teeth, keeping the water (and other objects) out of its mouth.
  • A beaver is able to see underwater. It has an extra, clear eyelid which protects its eyes but allows it to have clear vision while swimming. Also, it has "valves" in its ears and nose which close when it dives and swims.
  • It can use its front feet like hands, to grasp objects, yet its back feet are webbed to enhance its swimming strength and endurance.
  • The beaver has a thick, insulating fur underlying its main coat. The beaver produces an oil which it will comb through its fur (with the help of a special grooming claw) to give its dense fur an extra waterproof layer.
