According to Cayuga tradition, a supreme creator, Orenda, was recognized in the festivals held for harvest, maple sap, strawberries, and corn. An eight-day event in midwinter was held to forgive past wrongs.

In the early nineteenth century the teachings of Handsome Lake became popular among Cayuga. Handsome Lake was a Seneca who taught about Jesus and also blended the traditional celebrations with Christian-style confessions of sin and urged Native Americans to stay away from alcohol. His teachings eventually were incorporated into the Longhouse religion, which continues to have followers today.

Traditional Mohawk hair

The Mohawks, like many indigenous tribes in the Great Lakes region, sometimes wore a hair style in which all their hair would be cut off except for a narrow strip down the middle of the scalp from the forehead to the nape, that was approximately three finger widths across. This style was only used by warriors going off to war. The Mohawks saw their hair as a connection to the creator, and therefore grew it long. But when they went to war, they cut all or some of it off, leaving that narrow strip. They did this because they did not want the creator to go with them to war. [citation needed]

The Cherokee revered the Great Spirit, called the Yowa (a name so sacred that only a priest could say it), who presided over all things and created Mother Earth. They held that signs, visions, dreams, and powers were all gifts of the spirits, and that their world was intertwined and presided over by the spirit world. The Cherokee believed that every aspect and thing had a spirit presiding over it, but did not hold a belief in multiple gods. All figures identified as 'gods' were simply greater beings in the Cherokee belief whose names were so great there were no English words for them, and thus they were recognized as 'gods' by Englishmen. However, the Cherokee paid direct respect to and worshipped only Yowa. Historically, like many native tribes (then called "Indians"), the Iroquois were ethical monotheists-- they believed in a "Great Spirit" (what western faiths called God) and a number of spiritual teachers and prophets who spoke to the ancestors. The Iroquois name for the Great Spirit was Tarachiawagon, which means "Holder of the Heavens." The Iroquois also had some animist beliefs-- they believed the spirit of God could be found in nature, so they respected nature's gifts, especially corn and various kinds of fruits, since these were given by God to help His children on earth. The Iroquois faith also stressed brotherhood. Later, Christian missionaries, who believed the Indians were heathens, forced them to adopt Christianity and many did. But today, the descendants of the Iroquois are making an effort to preserve the faith which their ancestors practiced.
