DNA fingerprinting can do many things. Since it looks at your genetics which comes from your parents you can use it to find your birth parents if you were adopted. The most popular thing it is used for is crime scenes matching the DNA from it to the suspects DNA. DNA fingerprinting requires alot of DNA to run a gel so they created PCR which duplicates the DNA so instead of a puddle of blood now they can just do it with a drop of blood. That process is called DNA Profiling.

What, specifically, is your question? DNA evidence and fingerprint evidence are two entirely different disciplines.

Actually, the question is about DNA fingerprinting, which is the term for using DNA evidence to create profiles of each individual. DNA evidence includes blood, hair follicles, skin cells, bone, semen, and other types of body tissue.

The most important advantages thus far have included the exoneration of wrongfully convicted individuals, the conviction of criminals in re-opened cases that previously had insufficient evidence (such as the Green River Killer, who was linked to semen found in the victims), and the identification of historical remains, including the Romanov family and the imprisoned son of Marie Antoinette. Scientists compare DNA from the remains to that of living and deceased relatives. Oftentimes, these latter discoveries are doubted by certain communities, due largely in part to the controversy surrounding the historical events in question.

This technology has also been useful in identifying murder victims and people involved in large-scale catastrophes, including victims of September 11th. And of course, if you've ever seen a talk show, you know that paternity tests are a regular occurrence.

From an anthropological/genealogical standpoint, researchers have been able to make lineage connections between various groups of people and study ancient communities using mummified remains. The benefits are endless and scientists are discovering new ways to use DNA fingerprinting every day.

Firstly, it helps the police with the crime because they could use the DNA fingerprinting to keep a record. When the person is released from jail the record of their fingerprinting is IN, so if they are found guilty of some other stuff and deny it, they will take a DNA fingerprint of the criminal who says that he is innocent, match it with the PREVIOUS records and if it matches, that person will a) have a longer time in jail or b) have a LARGER record.

This is just ONE reason. Anyway, are you doing the Young Geneticist card cuz I'm stuck, too.
