Crop rotation allows the soil to recover. Proper crop rotation will replace nutrients that are consumed by the previous crop. Planting the same crop year after year will deplete certain nutrients and make the soil unproductive.

There are many reasons why people decide to plant different crops together. One such reason is that you can receive more yield from a certain piece of land than you would had you just planted one crop; it utilizes more of the soil and space in an area. Another benefit is the longevity of the soil if the right plants are grown together. The Native Americans were able to use the soil of one area for years to grow squash and corn in the same spot. This is because Corn take Nitrogen out of the soil while squash replaces it. They are known as 'sister plants' because of this quality. Normally, farmers will need to rest the soil for a year or more in order for this to happen otherwise.

growling a variety of crops gives the farmer the chance to use as much land as possible for harvesting crops because each crop will use or contribute different things in the soil. also if some crops are hardier than others the farmer has the chance of salvaging some crop if the season is too wet/short/hot/poor.
