When a microorganism (antigen) is introduced into the body, our immune system produces antibody specific to that microorganism. The disease-causing microorganisms you receive through vaccination are killed, weakened, or modified to avoid making you develop the diseases, but adequate enough for antibody production. Those antibodies will fight the microorganisms should you contract them in the future so you don't get sick from them.

Its quite simple really. Here are a few benefits of vaccines.

  • After a person is vaccinated for a certain pathogen they remain immune for the remainder of their lives (But sometimes booster jabs are needed to remind the body)
  • If enough people are vaccinated, the disease cannot spread and therefore becomes practically extinct!
  • Its a lot cheaper to prevent diseases rather than treat them apparently.

I hope this helped!

A vaccine contains weakened or dead pathogens that the vaccine is against. For example the polio vaccine would contain the dead/weakened polio virus. This means that the White blood cells will identify the virus and produce the antibodies to destroy the virus. On the antibodies is a protein that basically can remember the shape of the virus. Therefore the next time the virus comes into your body, your immune system already has the appropriate protein on the antibodies to destroy the virus straight away. The virus will be killed before it can multiply to any dangerous level and you will probably never know that you have had it!

Vaccinations work by giving a tiny amount of a virus or viruses (most use dead viruses but some use live) to trigger your immune system to make antibodies against it. Once the vaccination has "infected" you at a very low level, so your immune system made antibodies, you will not get that virus from others in your community. However, flu viruses mutate frequently, so a vaccine this year may not be effective against next year's new mutation. But for older germs, like mumps, measles, etc., we can prevent millions of babies and children from getting ill or dying. Flu vaccines protect millions of adults from getting common flu, which can often lead to pneumonia--which can kill young and old.

Vaccines are made in such a way that your body 'thinks' that it is being invaded by a certain bacteria or virus. But it isn't really. Your body begins to make antibodies against that organism and later on, the cells that made the antibodies, are kept in reserve by the body. When the real 'bug' attacks, your body can make millions of antibodies and they will stop the spread of the bug and you will not even know that it happened. You were immune to that bug.
