Best Answer

Parachutes are not rated by their speed.

A parachute works by increasing the air resistance of a suspended falling body or object. The greater the mass of the object the larger the area of the parachute must be to reduce the speed to an acceptable level.

It was originally Silk, I think it's Nylon now.

There are 2 types of "rip-stop" nylon used in making parachutes. One is "zero porosity", or zero P and the second is called "F-111" (I think this is a scientific number for it's porosity)

Zero porosity nylon allows no air to pass through the fabric, so when the air inflates the canopy, it makes for a more ridgid airfoil, and a more stable one as well. This is the most common material used for parachutes now.

Years ago, replacing silk, was an invention called "F-111" This nylon allows a certain amount of air to pass through it's pores, making a parachute respond at a slower rate than zero p.

Nylon. There are lots of different parachute manufacturers. They have many different kinds of canopies for many different types of skydivers- free flyers, relative work, accuracy, swooping, etc. would likely use a different rig for each. Figure out what you want to be doing, then read the ads that are geared towards that type of jump.

Drag, that's assuming it deploys, another requirement to be successful.
