Most of wireless adapters have the same range. There are more expensive versions which support longer range. You need to read the manual for your laptop to find out the range for the wireless adapter you have. Also very often advertised range does not lay even close the real life value. For the most applications and cases built-in adapter should do just fine.

depends on how much you use the net and how fast you want it. You could go dialup and be the cheapest but it slow. If you surf ALOT go with a service in your home the add a wireless router so you are not tied to a desk. If you want to use it everywhere and dont use it much and dont care about speed go wireless if it is fairly a new laptop / latest laptop you obvioulsy dont have to buy wireless internet card, it comes inbuilt all you need is a wireless router,in this case you can use multiple laptops and all you need is that you should provide each computer with sharing key called WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)key-- it is a security code generated in your wireless router. If it is an old laptop which does not have inbuilt wireless card then you should purchase wireless internet adaptor and follow the same as above, in both the cases it's going to cost you little money.
