Within the United States arena, try clicking on the related links section below. That will provide a brief overview of some 3rd party (albeit unofficial & largely unsubstantiated) rankings.

Unfortunately, official ranking institutions (like US News & World Report, Newsweek, etc.) have refused to shed any light on this obscured topic, so people's individual research in blogs and forums is all that you have.

One way to shed some light on the Programs is to see where the Program is housed. For example, NYU's Program is housed within the Courant School of Mathematics (as is University of Chicago) whereas Columbia's Program is housed within the Fu School of Engineering. Berkeley boasts that its program is the only one housed entirely within its Business School (which actually isn't correct because that is also the case with Carnegie Mellon's Program).

One disppointing fact with these programs is that although you are receiving a degree of sorts in Finance (Financial Mathematics, Financial Engineering, Computational Finance, etc.), in most of the Programs you do not have access to the Faculty of Finance housed within their business school. For instance, the University of Chicago has some of the most renowned Finance Faculty in the country; however, you are given no access to these Professors and they teach none of the curriculum in the Financial Mathematics Program. The only programs that provide access to Finance Faculty in the US are the programs housed within their respective Business Schools or ones that provide the ability to take electives within the School of Finance (CMU, Michigan, Stanford, Berkeley & Princeton).

The other factor that differentiates schools is the amount of flexibility in the Program. CMU has the most structured Program (with the ability to take at most 1 elective during the 16 month period) whereas Stanford probably has the least structured program (where a majority of your coursework can be taken from different schools and departments).
