An animal of the plains habitats of North America, the black footed ferret feeds mainly on prairie dogs, and even resides in empty burrows of its prey. This is one species that was literally brought back from the edge of extinction. Presumed extinct, a small Wyoming population was found, and a captive breeding program has been successful, and today nearly 2500 ferrets roam their former haunts in several locations.
