What are the catch-all questions on WikiAnswers?

Under normal circumstances, an alternate wording of a question should only be "split" into its own question if it is materially different from the main question (even if it is a slight variation on the parent question). Spelling errors and different wordings should not be split out.

The one exception to this rule is if the answer to the split-off question is illegal or otherwise in violation of the WikiAnswers terms of use. In this case, an answer to the parent question is supplied with helpful information and/or a message that the WikiAnswers community will not provide an answer to that question. The answer is then protected by a supervisor to prevent modification by other contributors.

Why shouldn't the inappropriate questions be deleted instead of merged into a protected question? The reason we collect them in one place is so that subsequent people who asked that question will be routed to an appropriate answer. If the alternate wordings are deleted then when they are asked again they will become separate unprotected questions. At that point, until a supervisor catches it and merges it again (added work for the supervisor) the new question could be answered with objectionable or harmful information!

Catch-all questions should not be unprotected or the answer edited for any reason without prior agreement with a catch-all supervisor.
