In the late nineteenth century, new technologies changed the face of manufacturing in Europe, which led to new levels of economic growth.

Like the first industrial revolution, which focused on coal, steam, and iron. The second industrial revolution relied on steel, electricity, and chemicals. Steel was harder, stronger, and more malleable than iron. In fact, between the 1850s and 1870s, three different processes for defining and mass-producing alloy steel were developed and steel production soared with shipbuilders making quick switches to steel construction. Electricity's advantages were pretty well-known. By the end of the century, large power stations were able to send electric current over vast distances. In 1879, Thomas Edison and his associates also invented the incandescent-filament lamp and turned electricity into light. The demand for electricity skyrocketed and, very soon, whole metropolitan areas were electrified. The chemical industry was the third important new technology that contributed to this industrial revolution. The efficient production of alkali and sulfuric acid transformed the manufacture of consumer goods such as paper, soaps, textiles, and fertilizer.

Besides the sudden development in industries, many other changes were happening. Production was going through some serious changes. Heavy industry and mass marketing improved production of all of the above and more. Consumption, too, began to shift to the center of economic activity. Department stores were developed and was a symbol of urbanization. Advertising, as well, was developing and the lavish posters of the late nineteenth century advertised concert halls, soaps, bicycles, and sewing machines.

And, last of all, with everything just named, capitalist institutions began to rise. Enormous funds were needed for large scale enterprises, so entrepreneurs needed to offer better guarantees on investors' money. To do so, most European countries enacted/improved limited-liability laws, which said that stockholders could lose only the value of their shares in the event of bankruptcy. Overall, there was a significant drive toward larger business enterprises because of a want of increased profits.

Thus, asides from products, demand/supply, as well as a strong desire of bigger businesses sparked the second industrial revolution.
