The gear shift knob on a ford Ranger is pressed on tightly. A heat gun or hair dryer can be used to heat the knob to help remove it.
It could be one of the heat shields on the exhaust system
change the thermostat

need help with a ford ranger the blower switch all been replace that there all work .but still no heat So told that there are a door that turn from Ac to Heat some where upon the dash .

On your 1989 Ford Ranger : The vacuum modulator valve is on the passenger side of the A4LD automatic transmission ( it might be behind a heat shield )
replace the heater core if that's not it start checking fuse
