Several things cause accidents on the road. These are in no particular order: Too much speed, inattention, fatigue/dozing, alcohol/drugs, telephones and other distractions, lack of knowledge, lack of adequate training, not understanding what happens to the road surface under different kinds of conditions (hydroplaning, black ice, etc) lack of courtesy (nice way of saying 'road rage') poor planning leading to a perceived need for haste, inadequate vehicle maintenance... the list could go on.
