The Causes of Illiteracy

Nowadays, there are a lot of causes of illiteracy. For my opinion, there are three main point causes of illiteracy such as socially problems, family problems, and motivational problems.
The most important cause of illiteracy is socially problems. Actually, some develop country is not care education for their countryside. Especially, there is a little school in my countryside at Viet Nam. The countryside's children do have not enough school for their studying. Furthermore, they have not conditions such as money and traffic for their learning because their family have not tuition for their and is very far with their school.
Another cause of illiteracy is family problems. The first is history family, that mean is if their parents are worker, they also are worker. They don't care about their education. For example, I have known some family at my countryside. Parents are worker for my family. Their salaries are just enough family's life. Their children can not go to school. They just learn their working. After that, they become worker.
Finally, the motivation is also cause of illiteracy. Nowadays, there are a lot of entertainments, which the children are very excited, don't like to go the school. Specifically, almost children who have lived at center city have a lot of new entertainment for them. They spend their time for there and don't care their learning. Moreover, almost people don't have literacy because they don't have plan for your future. They just think about their life in the present. For instance, I used to think to learn mayor and work about my life in the present. I didn't learn more English because I didn't think I go the USA. That is big mistake in my life. Now, I have to try to learn English very hard more than the other people.
Consequently, the popular causes of illiteracy are socially problems, family problem, and motional problems. However, if we fix problems, we would have education in our life and without people is illiteracy.

EFFECTS OF ILLITERACY ON SOCIETY

Recent studies show that there is an increasing rate of illiteracy all over the world.A study conducted by WSI(World Statistics Institute) shows that over 27% of people are illiterate globaly. Another study by the same institute shows that the speed at which illiteracy rate ascends is 32%. These rates are quite important, as illiteracy has terrible effects on society.
The most important effect of illiteracy on society is that, it works as an inhibitor. That is to say, the more illiterate people there are in a country, the harder it will be for the country to develop. This fact could be clarified with an example: America(whose illiteracy rate is below 5%) and Canada(Illiteracy rate: around 8%) are developed countries, whereas countries, like Turkey and Iran(Illiteracy rates: 61% and 43% in order) are undeveloped countries.
Illiteracy has got a kind of "genetic" effect. The children of illiterate people are more likely to be illiterate that those who aren't. Even if the parents don't want their children to be illiterate, their children, observing the parents, see that they somehow manage to live and adopt the idea that illiteracy isn't actually a bad thing. And since people develop most of their character during childhood, they choose to go with illiteracy.
Another major effect of illiteracy is that, illiterate people believe in the said things easily. They do not investigate what was said or told to them. When looked at the pages of history, it can be seen that, while most uneducated people are slaves, guardians and assistants; people who are educated are mostly kings, quenns and sultans. They are not slaves because they wanted, but because people superior to them -in terms of education- made them so.
All these significant results of illiteracy affect society in a bad way. So, illiteracy rates must be tried to cut down.

Illiteracy has many causes, such as influences in the child's environment. Examples of these environmental influences are the child's place of residence and the overall economic conditions of that area, or the existing illiteracy of a parent or guardian. Illiteracy is more common in rural areas as opposed to suburban areas for several reasons. Most illiterate children in rural areas are being raised by a single parent. The reason for illiteracy is that these single parents are often too busy working to pay the bills to teach their children necessary skills that they will require in life. Another reason is that some of these children are being raised by their grandparents. Over the years, educational standards have changed greatly. Children are more advanced than their grandparents and therefore their grandparents are unable to help their grandchildren with their homework. If a parent is illiterate, then the child has a greater chance of becoming an illiterate also. The advancement of technology has also had an impact on the illiteracy of the Y and Z Generations. These two generations of people grew up in the Digital Age of computers and cellular phones. With texting, instant messaging, email, and social networking sites so readily available to the public, these applications are beginning to quickly invade the lives of many members of the Y and Z generations. These devices are slowly becoming of more importance to these people than their education. With more and more time being spent on these inventions of the Digital Age and a smaller amount of time being spent on learning and studying, illiteracy is quickly becoming more common in today's society. Peer pressure is another reason for illiteracy because a child is much more likely to be influenced by their peers learning habits rather than develop their own. Many times, intelligent students are often mocked out of resentment by their classmates for being so bright, which can bring down the student's self-esteem. In order to stop the ridicule, these children may 'dumb' themselves down in order to fit in with everybody else.

Some of the major causes are:

  1. Economic condition of the people (poverty). So children need to work and can't be spared for school. Or schooling may only be compulsory in elementary grades. Or there may be no free education.
  2. Ineffective implementation of educational programs in rural areas.
  3. Lack of entrepreneurship by the educated to share and spread knowledge.
  4. Preference to work rather than to study (no internal economic incentive)
  5. Emigration of educated individuals (external economic incentive)

The governments in many developing nations lack either resources, expertise, or the incentive to improve educational opportunities. The available resources cover only a tiny fraction of the populations that would benefit from them.
