A Chain of Command is a list of those who are in charge and what rank they hold in the military. This is the Chain of Command according to the USAF

Starting from Highest ranking to lowest ranking

TOP CIVILIAN RANKS:

The President of the United States - Commander in Chief

The Secretary of Defense

The Secretary of the Air Force

OFFICER RANKS:

The Chief of Staff - General - four silver stars

Lieutenant General - three silver stars

Major General - two silver stars

Brigadier General - one silver star

Colonel - a silver Eagle

Lieutenant Colonel - a silver oak leaf

Major - a gold oak leaf

Captain - two vertical silver bars

Each of the above ranks can take the title of COMMANDER when assuming responsibility for a particular squadron, wing, base or installation.

First Lieutenant - one vertical silver bar

Second Lieutenant - one vertical gold bar

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force - an eight stripe chevron including the seal of the USA in the central field as well as leaf clusters surrounding the chevron star.

Command Chief Master Sergeant - an eight stripe chevron including a large solid star in the central field

First Sergeant - a six, seven, or eight stripe chevron with a diamond in the central field.

Chief Master Sergeant - an eight stripe chevron

Senior Master Sergeant - a seven stripe chevron

Master Sergeant - a six stripe chevron

Technical Sergeant - a five stripe chevron

Staff Sergeant - a four stripe chevron

Each of the above Enlisted ranks (up to CMSGT) can take the title of Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge - NCOIC when taking command of a particular work area or shop.

Senior Airman - a three stripe chevron

Blue Rope - can be worn by a three, four, or five stripe chevron. Rope is worn around the left shoulder and designates a Military Training Instructor. (MTI) Red Rope - can be worn by a Technical School Student with a one or two stripe chevron. Designates the head student leader of the Technical school squadron. Rope is worn around the left shoulder. Other Student leaders in order of rank. Yellow Rope, Green Rope, and White Rope. Some schools have Black Ropes who are leaders of the student drill teams.

Airman First Class - a two stripe chevron

Airman - a one stripe chevron

Airman Basic - no rank insignia
