That all depends on what kind of surgery you're having. There are some major operations where the chances are lower, but there are also very simple ones with very high success rates.
For example, having tonsils removed is a very common surgery with a high success rate.
Operations involving the spine are more serious.
However, it also depends on the doctor, the individual's precise condition, and luck.
But just because someone says 'surgery', that doesn't mean it's serious, or that you'll die on the operating table.
That depends a lot on the type of operation, the skill of the surgeon and the condition of the patient to begin with. Generally, people who are not expected to survive an operation are not offered the operation to begin with (which also means that they don't mess up "death during operation" statistics). However if the operation is 'life or death' they may still be offered the choice anyway. There's so many variables (type of op, duration, age, general health, demeanor, how long they've already been in hospital for etc...) that it's not easy to generalise a standard answer to the question.
Generally, the younger and healthier the patient, the more likely they are to survive an operation. (That's not to say that all "old, unhealthy" people die from operations. ) Most people die of post-operative complications (infections etc...), not from the operation itself.
It is dependant on the patient. I had open heart surgery at age 52 and was told the chance of motality was less than 1%. I know it goes up with age and poor health.
it depends on ur age. if u r 45 or above ur risk is about 16%-49%. but don't be scared- my dad went through this- and he's still alive and he's 62.
Mortality from orthopedic surgical procedures is not common.
