It depends on the amount of blood lost. One can lose up to a pint without noticing any symptoms. But usually anything more than that can amount to shock and other serious complications. Your chances of dying are much lower if you seek emergency medical treatment as quickly as possible. Applying pressure to the wound with some kind of cloth can slow the bleeding, but you need to go to your local Emergency room or dial 911 (or your local emergency number) as soon as possible. Do not delay. Note from the Author: This answer has been provided by a medical professional, but not a medical doctor. Does a person die if his hand is cut off?

That depends on the circumstances. He might die having lost too much blood unless the wound had some kind of compression bandage put on it. Shock/pain from the trauma of the injury coupled with blood loss might be fatal. Infection after the fact can easily be fatal if no medical intervention is made. With some good basic first aid right after the injury and professional care in 24 to 48 hours, the victim should not have to die. Certainly their life will change for the loss of a hand, however.
