Very little chance of getting the flu in spite of getting a flu shot. Perhaps 10%, probably less, of the people who get the flu vaccination end up getting the flu anyway. In most cases these people have a problem that affects their immune systems and doesn't allow them to achieve a full immune response that is needed for immunity. Studies have shown reductions in flu by up to 90% from the effective use of flu vaccinations. It is safer to get the vaccine than to risk going without it.

You needn't worry about getting the flu from the shot. Flu vaccines are made in two forms, either from deactivated ("dead") viruses, or from "attenuated" viruses, which have been processed so that they can not make you sick. Attenuated means weakened.

In the US flu vaccines come in both forms. The attenuated versions are administered in nasal sprays and the inert vaccines are prepared for injections into the muscle. See the related questions below for more details.

If there is tons of people surrounding you with the Flu and they are not being cautious and are coughing all over you then you would most likely get it. But if you are being careful and everyone around you is then its possible you wont get it.

Untreated, extrememly high. Treated, very low. The hysteria is due to the idea that if this spreads like wildfire then there will not be enough drugs/medical personal to treat it. Think plauge. The best defense? WASH YOUR HANDS. Alot. Use alcohol based hand sanitizer. You'll be just fine.

UPDATE:

It is very low now that most people are vaccinated and the pandemic has been declared over. If you have not had your flu shot, this is the time to get it (January 2011).

During the pandemic rough estimates were:

Chances of contracting the virus stands at 305 million / 70,544 = 4,323.54: Chances = 1 in 4,324 (chances of dying once contracted are currently 2.7%)

Population of the United States is estimated at 305 million.

Chances of dying from swine flu in the United States is 305 million / 1,250 = 244,000: Chances = 1 in 244,000

Chances of dying from regular flu in the United States is 305 million / 36,171 = 8,432: Chances = 1 in 8,432

Chances of dying once contracted is (worst case) 44,555 / 1,250 = 35.64: Chances = 1 in 36 (best case is 1 in 56)

Chances of dying in a car accident is 305 million / 34,017 (in 2008) = 8,966: Chances = 1 in 8,966

Chances of being the victim of a violent crime is 305 million / 1,382,012 (in 2008) = 221: Chances = 1 in 221

Chances of getting killed by someone is 305 million / 16,272 (in 2008) = 18,744: Chances = 1 in 18,744

Chances of dying from HIV/AIDS is 305 million / 17,011 (in 2008) = 17,930: Chances = 1 in 17,930

Chances of dying from a paper cut: 1 in 19,000,000

Chances of dying from drinking too much water: (really small, but it's possible!)

Chances of dying within 150 years: 100%

__________________________________________________________________

The latest estimate from the World Health Organization (WHO) is that over the next few years, 50% of the world's population will have had A-H1N1/09 if they go without vaccinations. So with no vaccination, that would give 50-50 odds.

Get vaccinated.

Depending upon the figures you use to calculate it, between an 0.012% and 0.147% chance.

The first number above comes from the statistics of cases and deaths from seasonal flu on average each year in the US: Over 30 million cases and, on average, 36, 000 deaths. (0.012%)

The second figure above is based upon statistics from world counts of seasonal flu cases. The calculations indicate a chance of 0.025% to 0.147%. This comes from reports of 340,000,000 to one billion cases and 250,000 to 500,000 deaths.
250K out of 1 billion = 0.025%
500K out of 340,000 000 = 0.147%
