The medieval period is generally defined as the period between the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 470 or so and the Protestant Reformation starting at about the beginning of the 16th century. Or the end can be thought to be the invention of printing or Columbus's voyage--they all happened at about the same time.

th Century (700s): Rise of the Vikings who arose in Scandinavia and settled in Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Iceland over the next three centuries. Iconoclasm debate in the Byzantine Empire, Charlemagne fights the battle of Roncesvalles

th Century (800s): Charlemagne Holy Roman Emperor. Alfred the Great king in Britain. Beowulf written.

th Century (900s): Dark Ages in Europe; Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt; Cordoba centre of learning in Spain; start of Mayan Empire

th Century (1000s): Normans conquer Britain. Macbeth king in Scotland, Schism between Orthodox and Catholic Christian Churches.

th Century (1100s): Western Europeans launch crusades to capture Palestine and set up kingdoms there. Foundation of Knights Templar. Robin Hood Legends. Richard the Lionheart vs. Saladin

th Century (1200s): King John signs Magna Carta. Rise of Chivalry in France. Mongols under Genghis Khan conquer most of Asia and are at the borders of Europe. Marco Polo visits Kublai Khan in China. William Wallace wins battle of Stirling Bridge.

th Century (1300s): The Black Death--Bubonic Plague wipes out a third of Europe's population. England commences 100 year war with France. Ming Dynasty in China

th Century (1400s): England conquers France at battle of Agincourt. Joan of Arc assists in driving the English out of France. Early career of Leonardo da vinci. Ferdinand and Isabella complete reconquista of Spain. Commencement of Aztec Empire in Mexico and Incan Empire in Peru.

Medieval literature is essentially all literature published in Europe in the Middle Ages (500 -- 1500 AD). Due to its extremely wide range of place and time, it's difficult to pin down a typical work of Medieval literature. Notable works include Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, The Divine Comedy, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
