Not including live baits, there are 3 general types of lures used in bass fishing: crankbaits, which are hard plastic or wood, and generally have at least two treble hooks, one hanging from the belly and another from the tail. There are, however, many variations on this. Most have a "lip", that causes the bait to dive. Soft plastics. The typical soft plastic is a worm, but there are lizards, crawfish, helgramites, frogs, even rats. These typically do not come with hooks, but are threaded on to a hook that is already attached to the end of your line. Spinner baits. These have some type of device that rotates, creating flashes of light as well as noise. A "spoon" is kind of like a spinner bait. There are others but this covers the vast majority of lures.
It really varies. On what kind, how big and what time you are fishing. But i will tell you what to use for largemouth bass in a fresh water lakes. Inthe morning when its not too light out you should look for a lure that makes noise at the top of the water, like a buzz bait or top water popper. In the noon time when the sun is out alot more try to look for something that makes a shine or has bright colors, and dives sorta like a crankbait or spinnerbait. In the afternoon when it is really sunny you should probably use a spinner bait or crankbait still that goes deep in the water. In the evening use darker colors. At night time you should use live baits like minnows or worms. i might not be correct where you fish or the type of fish you are catching and sorry if i am but GOOD FISHING TO YOU <o<
Depends what you are fishing for. I have listed the more common types of bait and just some of the fish that go for it.
Prawns - Bream, Flathead, Snapper, Cod, Yellowtail, Trevally, Barramundi
Worms - Luderick, Whiting, Bream, Mulloway, Flathead
Squid - Snapper, Kingfish, Parrot Fish, Trout, Bream, Perch
Crabs - Cod, Grouper, Snapper, Perch, Bream, Wrasse
It all depends on the time of year of course and what the fish are feeding on. The best year round lure would be a black and blue 3/8 ounce jig with a black, or blue trailer. But that is for Nebraska fishing where the water is always dirty. Can't go wrong with a Texas rigged plastic worm or lizard. My other go to lure is a YUM brand Junebug (color) dinger rigged just whacky style which is just a 3/0 hook with the worm hooked one time right in the middle where it flops over both sides. Don't know why but it drives bass nuts usually on the initial fall.
I found one better than anything. Zoom Ultravibe Speedcraw, in green pumpkin color.
Texas rigged or Carolina rigged.
Finesse worms, spinnerbaits or crankbaits.
All above are great bass lures, but the hottest thing going now is the "Alabama Rig".
It consists of a hard short, shad like head, which has five wires trailing behind with five jigheads. Plastic swim baits like flukes or sassy shads are attached to the jig heads. Fisherman are really wearing suspended bass out on this rig, catching two, even three at once!
B.A.S.S is considering whether or not to make this bait illegal in their tournaments, and some states are considering banning it!
Pike lures can be broken down into three common groups. The first group are Spoons. Spoons are made up an oval shaped piece of metal that is curved inward and they have a single treble hook at the end. Spoons are known to wiggle and vibrate while in the water. The second group is called Crankbaits. Crankbaits look like bait fish and are usually made of plastic. The last group of pike lures are called Spinners. Spinners are larger and give lots of flash when they're in the water.
Other pikes which is bigger.Pikes are known for their cannibalism. One can even buy pike lures which are a pike imitation. I think you can find one in my link if you want to see.
Pike are the eating machines of fresh water. They will strike at almost anything that moves in or on the surface of water. Minnows, worms, mice, insects and lures of every sort.
Rubber silicone is the most common type of Cod lure made. They consist of many different shapes, sizes, and colors. These types of lures seem to be more successful at attracting the Cod and making them a successful catch.
