At a very basic level, the elements of any computing system is an input device, a processing device, and an output deivce. Input devices include mice, keyboards, and scanners, while output devices include monitors or printers. The processing device at the very basic level is the CPU, or central processing unit. This is the main unit that takes information from the input device, acts on that information, and returns information to the output devices. In the PC computer, this processing unit requires a lot of support elements, such as a motherboard to hold the processor and direct signals into and out of the processor. The motherboard also handles routing information through circuits to and from various other areas of the computer as directed by the CPU, such as additional memory called RAM, or permanent storage devices such as the hard drive. The motherboard also deal with the power requirements of all parts of the computer, taking power from the power supply and distributing it to all attached devices that require it, including the processor. Additions can be found in computers and are often for specialized uses, such as specific cards to handle video or high quality sound, or specific connections for external devices, such as firewire or USB. All of these additions are connected in some way to the motherboard, and thus to all of the other elements in the computer.
