Conditions generally favorable for tornado formation include strong wind shear, high temperature and humidity, a high altitude "cap" of stable air, and a front or dry line to trigger thunderstorm development. On a shorter term meteorologists look for rotation, usually in the southwest quadrant of a thunderstorm, especially if it is accompanied by a down draft and "dry slot".
If you are in the path of a tornado go to your basement or the lowest floor of your house and crouch down facing a wall, covering your head. If you don't have a basement Find an interior room, closet, or hallway or a bathroom on the lowest floor of your house. If you choose a bathroom take cover in the tub if it has one and put blankets and pillows on top of yourself. If you have children get in on top of them. Stay away from windows. Abandon vehicles and mobile homes for more sturdy structures. If caught outside with no access to shelter take cover in a ditch or depression and get as low as possible. Do not take cover under a bridge.
