In terms of microwaves themselves, the dangers are largely limited to the effects of the heat generated when the microwaves interact with human tissue. The greatest risk of high power microwaves is to the eyes, where the heat cannot be quickly removed by the cooling effect of the blood supply. Hence, corneas are particularly vunerable to micriwave heating. The testes in males are also vulnerable, although it is generally less likely that they will be exposed to microwaves.

In terms of microwave oven use, there are two principle dangers - The first is superheated liquids (liquids above their normal boiling point), which can flash-boil when, for example, instant coffee, sugar, or any other power is added. The second (and at one time the cause of most microwave oven accidents) comes from exploding unbroken eggs, as the yolk heats so efficiently that, even if the egg doesn't explode in the microwave, it can explode in the user's face when it is removed from the microwave oven.

There are no reliable reports of adverse health effects from low-level microwaves from such things as mobile phones or telecom masts.

'Microwave' has a worse-than-deserved rap, probably related

to what we see microwave radiation doing to meatloaf and popcorn every day.

Notice that it's not giving the meatloaf cancer, it's simply resonating with the water

and fat molecules in the meat, to cause a quick rise in temperature. Pretty much

the same as would happen to the flesh on your arm if you stuck it inside a little box

where 1,500 watts of any other kind of electromagnetic radiation were standing.

By comparison, a microwave radio transmitter on a cell-tower communicates with

another microwave repeater 20 miles away, by blasting something like 1/4 watt of

microwave radiation out of its high-gain 'dish' antenna.

Disadvantages of microwave for cooking food

Cold Spots: Microwaves cause molecules in the food to vibrate. This vibrational energy can heat food to 100degreesC(212degreesF) - easily hot enough to kill bacteria. However, as the microwaves bounce off the metal oven walls inside the cooker in a set pattern there may be a few small areas or 'cold spots' that are missed. It is possible for bacteria to survive in 'cold spots', which could then lead to food poisoning. To avoid this problem, food must be regularly turned to ensure even cooking and the destruction of bacteria. It also helps to choose foods that are of equal size.

Microwaves may not always penetrate right through to the centre of large pieces of food, such as joints of meat or poultry. In such cases, the standing time allows the cooking to be completed by residual heat gradually spreading right through to the centre of the food. If food is still not cooked after a standing period, it may be given a second burst in the microwave, followed by another standing period

Microwaves are dangerous because they cause radiation, cell phones for example emit small quantities of radiation. Microwaves are linked to problems with pregnancies and linked with male infertility.

A disadvantage of microwaves is that they can cook food unevenly. They also can take away the nutrients from fresh foods, leaving them limp and even dehydrated.

How does food get crispy in the microwave?

Things like hot pockets and microwave pizzas use what is called a susceptor (usually in the form of a sleeve or container). These susceptors convert microwave energy into heat, which help crisp up food in the microwave, countering the effects of sogginess that is synonymous with microwave ovens. For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susceptor

What are the advantages and disadvantages of microwave telescopes?

Microwave transmission also requires line of sight in order to work properly. In order to allow two way communications two frequencies are used. However, this does not mean that there has to be two antennas because the frequencies can be dealt with by one antenna at both ends. The distance covered by microwave signals is based upon the height of the antenna. In order to increase this coverage each antenna has a built-in repeater that regenerates the signal before passing it on to the next antenna in line. The placement of the antenna to do this is approximately 25 miles. The main drawback of microwave signals is that they can be affected by weather, especially rain.
