It is the difference between a specific proper pronoun and a generic pronoun. Mac is the nickname for the Macintosh computer made by Apple. PC is an acronym that comes from the terms personal computer. Only the Macintosh is a Mac. The Macintosh is also a PC.

Both the PC and the Mac are very good for their own reasons. Here is a list of the main advantages of each:

Advantages of a PC

  • Much more popular, over 80% of all desktop computers use Windows
  • Uses a Start Menu and taskbar at the bottom (by default)
  • Easier for an inexperienced user
  • Considerably cheaper
  • Compatibility/Availability (most applications are developed for Windows only)
  • Plays commercial games
  • More customizable, hardware can be upgraded very easily.

Advantages of a Mac

  • Looks much better
  • Uses a Dock and a bar at the top (by default)
  • Safer (almost zero viruses)
  • Simpler, more reliable (less configuration, less processes)
  • Macs are made by Apple themselves (not many are custom-made)
  • Much more productive (Audio, Video and Image editing software is much better)
  • You can install Windows easily, alongside OS X (dual-booting).

Mac OS X is a Unix-like operating system developed by Apple for their Mac hardware line.

Windows is a series of operating systems, running their own proprietary kernel, that is developed by Microsoft and licensed to various computer manufacturers.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)

Starting with the most obvious difference, the GUI.

Mac OS X

The latest version of Mac OS X available at this time (10.6 Snow Leopard - February 4th, 2011) features a platform of icons at the bottom of the screen known as the dock, items can be pinned and unpinned from the dock, thumbnail previews of windows that are minimized are displayed beside the trashcan.

Application windows in Mac OS X feature 3 colored buttons on the left side of the very top of the window, red for hiding the application window (sometimes, and sometimes closing it), yellow for minimizing the window into the dock, and green for maximizing the window.

At the top of the screen Mac OS X features a menu bar, the currently selected application's main menu is listed at the top (File, Edit, and View menus) next to the title of the application in a bold typeface, and the Apple menu for Mac-related functions. On the right side of the menu bar is a row of icons, that allow quick access to an application's features if the developer chooses to put their icon in the menu bar, and farther right is the clock which displays the day and current time, and even farther right is the spotlight button, which allows searching of your Mac.

Windows

Currently, as of now, Windows 7 is the latest version of Windows. The Windows 7 task bar features pinned, square icons by default. These icons are icons put on the task bar by the user, and clicking on the said icon will open the linked application. The task bar puts all related windows to these applications in a stacked list on the icon resembled in the task bar.

To the right of the task bar is the system tray, where some applications will put their icon for quick access to their functions, and farther right is the clock, which currently displays the current date and time.

Every application in Windows has their menu contained at the top of the program (only if the program is using the Windows UI natively, this is not always the case). To the right of the very top of every application menu is the application's controls. From left to right: the minimize button, the maximize button, and the close button.

In contrast to Mac OS X, Windows will close the application rather than hide it if the close button is clicked.

Core

The deep-down internals of each operating system.

Windows

Applications in Windows are called executables, which are files with the extension .exe, these .exe files are executed in Windows itself to perform various tasks. When an application is installed, it makes an entry in the Programs and Features menu in the control panel. And it creates it's own folder known as the Program Files folder located in C:\Program Files\.

Each application's program files folder contains all the files it requires to function, this can be anything from application extensions (.dll's) to help files and the executables themselves.

Windows also works by a large informational database called the registry, within he registry are keys, which contain various types of data that both Windows and applications themselves store, this could be user information, configuration information, licensing information and more.

Mac OS X

Applications in Mac OS X are called "application bundles", these are folders with the .app extension, within the application bundle is a Contents folder, and within the Contents folder is a MacOS folder, containing the program's executables, a Resources folder, containing all the program's required resources; also an Info.plist file that contains all information about the application bundle itself, such as the location of the .icns file the application uses to display it's icon, the name of the application, and additional information the application itself uses, normally static configuration information that normally isn't modified unless it is modified by the end-user. And sometimes a Frameworks folder, containing all the program's XCode libraries (.dylib's) it requires to function.

Every single Mac OS X application is contained in this .app folder, Mac OS X contains no concept of a registry, however, it will create configuration information in a directory called Application Support; other than this everything a program needs to function is contained within it's own bundle.

Conclusion

This is just a quick difference/comparison of Windows and Mac OS X, and hopefully you learned from it!
