Fractional distillation is a batch process. "Ordinary" distillation probably refers to the steady state process where there is a constant inflow of material to be separated and the top and bottom streams are of a constant composition. In fractional distillation, the vapor coming off and being condensed will have a constantly changing composition. Fractional distillation is actually akin to a single stage of a multi-stage "ordinary" distillation.
