What are the differences between public and private policies?

Public and private colleges

A public college/university is funded by the state. Private is not. The main difference is price. I know a public school in NJ can cost anywhere from 12,000 to 20,000. A private one would probably start fro, 25,000 up to 32,000 or more.

In the end, someone with a degree from a private school will probably work the same job as a person with a public school degree.

Explanations from other Contributors:

  • I entirely support the first answer! Public universities are certainly at least as high-quality as private, but are usually considerably less expensive. In fact, if you plan to pursue graduate study, public universities *may* have more name recognition than most of their private counterparts (notice the *may*). I must admit, I'm a strong supporter of public education throughout a person's schooling, but I have a special spot in my heart for public universities.

  • I've attended both public and private (two of each). I don't feel one can be quite so quick to pass over some of the good and beneficial qualities of a private school...nor do I feel I should try and make it sound like a very good education cannot come from a public institution. Each school has its pro and cons. Private schools frequently offer smaller class sizes, more intimate educational interactions, increased opportunities to get really involved one on one in your course area, etc....but, as has been pointed out, this come at a cost $$. Study the schools that interest you very carefully, laying out the pros and cons. Don't let the $$$ over sway your thinking. You MAY desire to attend a private school for some very appropriate reasons...and ones which MAY serve you best. At the same time, you may quite appropriately choose a public school...for the very same reasons.
