Similar, but not the same! For movie making, they made numerous changes. Female parts were greatly enhanced from the small parts in the book. Some locations were changed. And some characters were eliminated altogether. In general, however, the films were as faithful to the book as possible. You will have to read the books then watch the movies to form your own opinion. Some of the major differences: Fellowship of the Ring Movie: No Tom Bombadil, no Barrow Downs, no Glorfindel (Arwen instead). Aragorn gave the Hobbits their swords as opposed to the Hobbits taking them from the Barrow wights. The Two Towers Movie: Eomer was not banished, Rohan had 2000 men at Helm's Deep, no warg attack happened, and the elves didn't come to Helm's Deep. Faramir didn't even think of taking the Ring, Frodo and Sam never went to Osgiliath, and Gandalf brought Erkenbrand to the rescue, not Eomer. The Return of the King Movie: Frodo never banished Sam, Rangers of Arnor came to Aragorn, Elrond never brought Anduril because Aragorn had it from the beginning, Aragorn brought Gondorians not the Army of the Dead to Minas Tirith, 6000 good guys stood before the Black Gate not 500, Gollum danced off into the lava of Mount Doom and wasn't pushed. In addition to these changes, they also lessened Eomer's importance, had no out-companies of Gondor, and completely disregarded Imrahil.

Well yes it is similar..but the movie leaves out a lot of the scenes in the book(chapters like "blood type"). The book is much more detailed..and better if i say so myself. But yes, the movie is based off the book and captures the same ideas and such.

They are set in Middle Earth and center around the One Ring and the quest to destroy it. The Hobbit is more of a fairy tale and The Lord of the Rings is very much an adult type of novel. The historic background and history a melded into one.

No, the movie directors changed a lot of things but the main plot and stuff are pretty similar.

Well it matters which movie you're talking about but the answer is no. Due to budget the directors have to cut a lot of important scenes in all the movies therefore they're not just like the books.

Well for one thing the new movie is being split into three movies. So far it seems like the movie has not cut anything major out of it. It seems to be as good as the book. I would give it a thumbs up to the directors they did a good job on following what I think Tolkien's vision was.

No. For a start, they are much more condensed; many details are omitted. This happens with any movie made from a book: it is hard to compress an entire book into a movie of about 2 hours; the movie-makers have to decide what to keep, and what details they may omit.

Then, there are some cases where there are actual changes. Most of them are minor details, that don't represent a major change to the story. For example, in Harry Potter 6, in the book, Hagrid overhears Snape discussing with Dumbledore, when Snape doesn't want to carry out a certain task (the task is not named at that point). Hagrid then tells Harry about this. In the movie, Harry overhears them directly.

Other details... well, let's say that I would have preferred them to stick to the original story. For example, in the movie Harry Potter 4, Dumbledore gets a little out of control, shaking Harry and shouting at him, whether he put his name in the chalice! This is completely out of character for Dumbledore. Or, in the movie Harry Potter 5, Harry's girlfriend, Cho, betrays the group that calls itself Dumbledore's Army. In the book, it was her friend (not shown in the movie) who betrayed them.

No, it will be different in many ways. Example, even though Frodo isn't born until 50 years after it, he will be in the movie.

The movies focus on the main events from the books, but the books are much more interesting, showing more day-to-day events unlike the movies which jump around quickly.
