Not very many difference.. the 4r44e transmission has a couple more electronic componets than the old A4LD. The 4.0 motors DO carry a differant converter..But the basic design is the same. When you get into the 5R55E that's where the difference is.

the 4r44e is the light duty transmission, and the 5R55E is " suposedly " the heavy duty one. Made to work on the 4.o v-6. But either one will go out about every 100k or so.

Automatic transmissions used on Fords do not have a drain plug in the transmission pan
automatic transmissions do not have clutches. If it is slipping it may need adjustment but probably will need to be replaced.
