Christian attitudes towards poverty are ambiguous. The Bible is of no help because its messages vary from Luke's concern for the welfare of the poor, through "the poor will always be with us" to John's portrayal of Jesus as the friend of the rich and powerful, who reserved his best miracles for his rich friends.

Some individual Christians may seek to help the poor, but others may just shrug their shoulders or perhaps believe that their church offerings or tithes absolve them of further responsibility. Some newer churches teach that wealth is next to righteousness, so we should pursue wealth rather than be overconcerned with the less fortunate. Even the Catholic Church is an enormously wealthy institution while presiding over the welfare of some of the world's poorest people.

There is probably no intrinsic difference between Christian attitudes in general and non-Christian attitudes towards poverty. We all have our consciences, and the extent to which we exercise our consciences or look to our self-interest is unlikely to be influenced by religion.

Perhaps the most famous biblical statement about the poor, the following extract from Matthew (also in Mark and Luke) demonstrates Christian concern for the poor: Matt 19:21: Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

A similar sentiment is: Mark 12:42-3:

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury.

On the other hand, all the gospels say that Jesus justified spending money that could have helped the poor, as in the following extract:

Matt 26:11: For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.

The gospel authors saw hope for the blind and infirm, but perhaps not for the poor:

Matt 11:5: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

Luke's Gospel is my favourite Gospel because of his righteous notions of morality, forgiveness, loving your enemies and helping the poor, as in: Luke 14:13-4:

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shall be blessed: for they cannot recompense thee .

In modern-day terms, the major Christian Churches all believe that they have an obligation to help the poor.

In Christianity, poverty and a humble life help bring individuals closer to God. Wealth isn't inherently evil, but greed causes people to act in their own self-interest and distracts Christians from helping others.
