Most of the volume of a cargo ship is devoted to the storage of cargo. Cargo is stored both above and below deck on most ships, either in holds (for containers or bulk substances) or tanks (for bulk liquid such as oil).
The aft part of the ship is composed of the superstructure, commonly referred to as the "house." The house containers the living quarters, offices, and galley spaces. The highest level of the house comprises the bridge, where the crewmembers control navigation.
Below the house superstructure is the engine room. It houses most of the machinery, such as the engines, generators, pumps, and so forth.
