When talking about literature (and poetry) imagery refers to the use of the five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight, sound.
For example, from the poem "My Papa's Waltz," the first and second lines read:
"The whiskey on your breath / could make a small boy dizzy"
Whiskey appeals to the use of smell and possibly taste. These are both images in the first line.
