The term layout implies newspaper lay-out. Related terms are format and page design. The way news items are placed on a page. Mind you, it is not confined to news items; it includes advertisements, news photographs (also called pix). A Chief Sub-Editor, or someone else, depending on the newspaper size and staff strength, plans a page depending on the news flow. Prior to that, the advt section marks out the advt that have to appear on the page and send in a dummy. The remaining space is meant for editorial content: news stories, graphics like cartoons, pix, charts, tables.

Based on newspaper style, or the day's news mix, the layout can be vertical, horizontal, radial or circus. (Terminology may vary from time to time or clime to clime. Currently, the term modular make-up is in vogue in Indian English newspapers. Language papers ahve their own jargon).

The main function of layout is to arrange news content in a proper order that the whole look has balance, contrast and harmony. Its function is also to grade news, tell the or show the news effectively. The functional design is the best design (layout). Well, the layour should not be clumsy or jarring. Then it is no make-up/layout at all. Make-up and layout are interchangeable terms)
