Narrative poetry tells a story.

Epic Poems: long, serious poems, usually about heroic deeds or events of specific cultural importance. The hero usually goes on a great quest or journey, faces great enemies and troubles, and returns home changed. An example would be "The Story Of Beowulf".

Epics have nine main characteristics:

  1. opens in media res (in the middle of the action)
  2. The setting is vast, covering many nations, the world, or the universe.
  3. begins with an invocation to a muse
  4. starts with a statement of the theme
  5. the use of epithets (repetition or stock phrases)
  6. includes long lists.
  7. features long and formal speeches.
  8. shows divine intervention on human affairs.
  9. "Star" heroes that embody the values of the civilization

Ballads: narrative songs; usually with alternating, 4-stress lines, simple repeating rhymes, and a refrain. A short narrative poem telling an actual folk story or folk-like story in verse form. An example of this would be "Richard Cory".

Idyls: short narrative poems about rural or pastoral life. An Idyl usually ignores the actual poverty of rural people and portrays an "idyllic" life.

Metrical Romance-a narrative poem that tells about the stories of knights and religious pursuits. An example of this would be "The Knight Tale."
