The most basic and frequent stitches used are the single needle stitch, the overlock stitch and the cover stitch.

In my sewing, I most often use the prick stitch, whip stitch, and running stitch.

Knitting Stitches: there are only 2 types of knitting stitches - knitting and purling. Technicaly I suppose a yarn over is a third, but I just consider that a variation.

Crochet stitches: slip stitch, chain, single crochet, half-double, double, and triple are the basic stitches made with a regular hook.

There are other stitches that are variations of these stitches, such as the popcorn and puff stitch, reverse single crochet, linked stitches, long stitches, post stitches, cross stitches and many more. Note there are a few other "stitches" done with other types of hooks such as the afghan stitch (also called tunisian crochet) made with an afghan hook - a long hook with a single hook on the end. There are also double ended hooks used to work crochet on the double.

There are other stitches that might be considered part of this category like broomstick lace which is worked on an oversize knitting needle and hairpin lace worked with a special hairpin tool and a crochet hook.
