Literature comes in many different types, but the most common are these: history; poetry; essays; general prose like scientific, philosophical, or legal writing; drama; oral literature; electronic literature; graphic novels and comic books; and film.

Some definitions:

History: writing about past events

Poetry: writing in metrical form

Essay: a short piece of writing about a subject

Drama: writing for theater, television

Oral Literature: spoken literature, as opposed to written

Comic Books: books containing comic strips with pictures and some writing to depict scenes and action

The different kinds of literature are sort of infinate. There are humor novels, historical fiction novels, drama, roamnce, etc. There's also poetry, which goes into another infinate amount of genres
