The "Book Musical" integrates the signing and dancing numbers into the plot, such as Singin' in the Rain, the Fred and Ginger films, the Rogers and Hamerstien movies, and The Buffy the Vampire season 6 episode "Once more with Feeling."
The other type, uses the musical productions as a discrete aspect. Examples of the second include Footlight Parade (and other early film musicals), Esther Williams' vehicles, and Cabaret, in which the music numbers are part of a show the characters are putting on.
Generally, scholars consider Showboat the bridge between from one type to the other. Either of these 2 main classifications can be drama, tragedy, comedy, etc.
