What are the different types of motorcycles?

Answer

Here's the summary from Timberwoof's Motorcycle FAQ:

  • Cruisers (such as Harley-Davidson) are low and long; their primary purpose is looking cool. They tend to be big and heavy.

  • Choppers- built mainly for show. They feature eye catching designs but don't perform too good.

  • Touring bikes are big and heavy, but have enough luggage for a long trip.

  • Sport-Touring bikes are not so big and have not so much luggage, but have better handling.

  • Sport bikes, also known as crotch rockets, are small, fast, light, and covered with shiny, cool, and expensive plastic. They are light and easy to handle, but their go-fast handles are very sensitive. A sport bike will try to kill you if it senses that you dont know what you're doing.

  • Standard or 'naked' bikes are competent at everything. Having little or no plastic to break when you drop one, they are an excellent choice for a beginner.

  • Dual-Sport bikes have big knobby tires and can go anywhere a street bike can go as well as almost everywhere an off-road bike can go. However, due to this compromise they do not offer exclusive performance on either type of terrain. Usually used by travelers or amateur riders.

  • Off-Road bikes have big knobby tires as well as a very flexible suspension.

  • Motocross bikes- The bare minimum. An engine, a seat, a pair of wheels and the suspension. The most powerful of all off-road bikes and built for racing only. However they are not road legal and due to their high performance require extensive maintenance and repairs after every race.

  • Enduro bikes- In essence are the road legal versions of motocross bikes. They have features such as lights, horns, mirrors, number plates, mufflers. Due to some of these additions however, they are just slightly "weaker" then motocross bikes. Enduros are used to race in Endurocross. It's a type of motocross race that lasts for a longer period of time (anywhere from several hours to days or even weeks)

  • SuperMotos- Similar to motocross bike but with slightly smaller suspension and various adaptations to make it run on both, dirt and asphalt.

  • Various other modifications of the original dirt bike design:
  • ** Trial bikes: for getting over very big obstacles
    • Speedway bikes: something like the Nascar only on dirt and two wheels
    • Hillclimb: for getting up very steep hills
