At one time the term sommelier (SOME - MAL- yeah) was only used as a title for a wine waiter. Now, this title is used for a person who has completed and passed certain levels of wine examinations. The title is also attached as a career titled persons who sell and suggest wines generally in a restaurant setting. At one time the title of sommelier was reserved for the beverage of wine.

Now the title of sommelier is a career title bestowed upon persons who have extensive knowledge of beverages and foods. These persons will generally work in a restaurant like setting or gourmet retail location. Here are a few other types of sommeliers:

  • Tea Sommelier
  • Water Sommelier
  • Coffee Sommelier
  • Cheese Sommelier
  • Beer Sommelier

The job duties of someone in this position would be to sell these beverages and foods through food and beverage pairings, occasion pairings and through factual information. Examples of factual information would include history, geographical, production methods and consumers personal preferences.
