Types of vaccines include attenuated chole agent vaccine, inactivated whole-agent vaccine, toxiod vaccine, acellular vanccine, conjugated vaccine, and subunit vaccine.

  • Live attenuated vaccines contain bacteria or viruses that have been altered so they can't cause disease.
  • Killed vaccines contain killed bacteria or inactivated viruses.
  • Toxoid vaccines contain toxins (or poisons) produced by the germ that have been made harmless.
  • Component vaccines contain parts of the whole bacteria or viruses.

  • Killed vaccines: These are preparations of the normal (wild type) infectious, pathogenic virus that has been rendered non-pathogenic, usually by chemical treatment such as with formalin that cross-links viral proteins.

  • Attenuated vaccines: These are live virus particles that grow in the vaccine recipient but do not cause disease because the vaccine virus has been altered (mutated) to a non-pathogenic form; for example, its tropism has been altered so that it no longer grows at a site that can cause disease.

  • Sub-unit vaccines: These are purified components of the virus, such as a surface antigen.

  • DNA vaccines: These are usually harmless viruses into which a gene for a (supposedly) protective antigen has been spliced. The protective antigen is then made in the vaccine recipient to elicit an immune response

There are several vaccines so frequently administered in the Untied States that it is hard to tell which are most common. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and DPT (Diphthera, Pertussis, Tetanus) are so common as to be virtually universal. Given the recommendatin of having Tetanus innoculation readministered every ten years, it may be the most common. Many people get a flu vaccine every year, but it is for a different strain of flu each time.
