What are the different types of vegetarians? In: Vegetarianism |
[Edit] |
A vegetarian is a person or animal with a diet exclusively of plant material.
Some people choose to eat a vegetarian diet for various health, ethical, ecological, or religious reasons. Within vegetarianism there are several sub-categories:
Some subcategories of Vegetarianism include:
True Vegetarian, or Strict Vegetarian. Those who follow this diet eat only plant based foods that include: fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, roots, etc. They do not eat the meat of any animal.
Fruitarian -- Fruitarians will only eat raw fruits and seeds (they only eat food that has fallen). They believe that eating cooked food is less healthful than only eating raw food.
Vegan -- don't eat any animal products, with some going so far as to ban honey and lanolin.
Some subcategories of Partial, or Pseudo-vegetarianism include:
Ovo-lacto vegetarian -- (literal translation is egg-milk vegetarian) eat dairy and eggs, but will not eat other animal products, including gelatin, tallow, or fish.
Pescitarian -- (literal translation is fish eater) include fish and other seafood in their diet, but not other meats.
