Vegetarianism IS acceptable. In fact, people are really interested when I say Im a vegetarian. Its a great conversation starter. And you can find something in common with other vegetarians, even if you have never met before.

The only downside is having trouble eating out. Most restaurants have veg options or will substitute their recipes. Fast food is hard to eat. But taco bell is great. And places like Burger King and Backyard Burger have veggie burgers.

Vegetarianism, unfortunately, is still not socially acceptable in some social circles.

My observation of many vegetarians is that many eat way too many sweets, dairy, and white flour and not enough VEGETABLES and protein. This can cause immune system problems although it's not a necessary consequence of vegetarianism if you carefully balance your diet.

Answer: 1) People asking what weird religion you belong to, or has your doctor said you musn't eat meat.

2) Not embarassing guests at pot-luck dinners.

3) People who think you are trying to be holier than them.

4) Looking at labels when shopping.

5) Outliving all your friends. and feeling lonely.

6) Having low blood pressure and finding it difficult to get angry when you want to.

7) People who think meat prevents anaemia, or that you will be short of iron.

8) Having one member of the family who lapses. (My children used to open all the doors, burn incense and rush out screaming if my wife opened a tin of sardines).

9) Having -for the sake of peace - to tell people that you are not really a vegetarian but eat meat whenever you feel like it. Without mentioning that the last time you "felt like it" was 60 years ago and undoubtedly the last ever.

10) Going to a prestigious public function and conveying the impression that you really only wanted a sprig of parsley (that everyone else left on the plate), because you couldn't find a single wholly vegetarian sandwich.

11) Being treated like a child in old age, because you still look like one.

Answer: Some would say a lot of flatulence, an extreme loss in weight and in muscles while being underweight, irritability towards others, having a harder time finding what's right and wrong to eat, some lose energy and feel very weak, some grow paler in skin color which isn't always appealing and can give a look of being sickly, etc.

There are downsides to being vegetarian, just like there are benefits. Some downsides include temptation from mea products, a more limited diet, a diet with less variety of foods available, lack of support from others, difficulty eating out, and nutrient deficiencies.

I am vegetarian, and the worst effects I have had are the occasional cravings for meat. Besides that, your weight might be effected, which I don't think is negative unless you are underweight already.

Another thing is the possible lack of protein, as you probably know, protein is very crucial and you should have at least five grams per meal, but dinner should probably hold ten.

If you take care of yourself there should be no disadvantages, unless you really love meat, fish, or junk food. If you don't get the required nutrients, you will become weaker, stop growing, become paler, lose hair, etc. Make sure you get protein and iron in your diet! Lacking it can hurt you! Some foods you should definitely include in a vegetarian diet are eggs, beans, tofu, pasta, veggies like broccoli and asparagus, fruit, rice, soy products, milk, yogurt! Try to avoid candy and other junk food because they can really hurt you especially with a diet like this.
