One particulary big disadvantage is that one cannot see subtle details. For example, if one were to find the average height of U.S. citizens and summarize the data via box and whisker plot, one would miss a particularly important observation. If, instead, one had also done a simple histogram, one would see that the distribution is bimodal, one for male and one for female.
