As with all genetic engineering, the major concern is the unpredictability of long-term consequences.

The technologies available for genetic engineering are not yet developed enough to modify DNA of a living organism specifically and reliably. Usually, some genetic changes are introduced unintentionally and these can cause severe problems for the organism.

Let us assume the technology was perfected and human DNA could be reliably altered for living human beings. There are still two major problems:

First, genetically engineered changes are always set for the entire lifetime of an organism. The changes are introduced just after an egg is fertilised, so that all cells resulting from the egg's cell division will also carry the modifications. Once the egg has divided, genetic modification becomes much more difficult or even impossible. This means that any unexpected consequences of a modification cannot be corrected and the organism then has to live with those consequences.

The second problem is the concern of what would be done with this technology. The intentions behind its develoment are almost always to improve medicine for treating genetic diseases, but the ability to modify DNA could be abused for unethical purposes once it is available.

- huge consumer resistance to Genetically modified food (i.e. many people do not like food that has been 'tampered with' genetically

- Genetic variety reduced (e.g. in crops, the amount of alleles is drastically reduced)

- Potential for interbreeding between wild and transgenic organisms

- Ethical considerations: e.g. animal rights/welfare, collecting DNA samples
