The process of recycling metals creates harmful and toxic chemicals (especially aluminium) You cant mix metals so you have to organise them into seperate groups this can be more expensve to collect and also time comsuming. In theory it uses more energy and more pollutiion to recycle metals then to make them from ORES

Recycling is hugely advantageous but it does have it's disadvantages. I've listed a few points, these are not definative and of course sunject to much debate! Costs- It is expensive to provide bins for all the different types of material that can be recycled. It's much cheaper to put everything in one bin. The costs associated with collecting these numerous bins are also considerably higher. Combustion-Some waste is incinerated before it is taken to landfill to save space. Without paper and card, this waster won't burn as easily. More energy will be required to incinerate the waste. Time- Sorting out waste rather than dumping it all in one place takes much more time. Pollution-Extra trucks collecting bins and recycling plants contribute to pollution. But don't be discouraged- recycling has huge advantages, the majority of which outweight the disadvantages listed.

Recycling metals is by far the best risk management tool available at the moment because it allows to reduce and any risk that may possibly be generated by the disposal of products at their “end of life”. Recycling metals has become an extremely important factor in three pillars of sustainable development. Sustainable development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability for future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development has three important pillars. These pillars are economic development, social consequences and development, and environmental protection. Recycling metals has also played a large role in the industrial and social goals of cost reduction, reduction of landfill waste, and lastly to meet the goal of a good management of limited resources. Society, governmental agencies, environmentalists, and many others can agree that the recycling of metals such as aluminum, steel, lead, nickel, and copper is a big step in moving towards the seemingly far goal of sustainable development. One of the biggest issues in the world today is the value of recycling to reach environmental sustainability. The most important gift that we as a human race have is the resources of the world, and we should make an oath to keep that world healthy and safe. So far, we have not upheld to this value, but there are several ways of doing so. To assess the value of recycling we should look at some of the impacts that have occurred on the environment. Such as, the effect of recycling on the wildlife, vegetation, and other important aspects or areas of the world such as wetlands. However, science cannot do everything. It is extremely difficult for today’s science to observe impacts on ozone depletion and climate changes. However, there are other ways to assess the importance of recycling. One way of assessing environmental sustainability is by an important and quite new method called “life cycle assessment”. Life cycle inventory assessment (LCI) helps to generate a summary of energy, water and resource consumption in the present time. It also discusses the amount of waste that is associated with each product that you can find in many of your locals stores, such as Wal-Mart. Research has shown that casting is by far the largest consumer of water in aluminum components. It uses approximately 3,500 liters per metric ton of output in aluminum production. This is just one of millions of problems of industry on the environment. If recycling metals was applied in this issue the amount of water consumption would decrease greatly, thus being a benefit to areas where water is scarce. So not only is this an environmental solution but it is a social issue because it affects many peoples amounts of drinking water. Metal recycling has reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced water consumption, and reduced energy output and usage. As a result of lowered energy usage less greenhouse gasses are emitted. Therefore, recycling metals is an advantage to reducing the impacts of global warming. Recycling metals has the potential to reduce energy consumption of the production of metals such as aluminum, magnesium and lead by 80%, copper by 70%, and zinc by 75%. This also proves that recycling metals is vital and must be applied in more areas of the world and even more intensely pushed on manufacturing companies that cause many environmental issues. Not only environmental issues must be taken into hand, but also so must the economic issues. One of the most shocking facts is that the metal aluminum is extremely expensive. Its cost towers over glass, cardboard, and newspaper. It costs about 1200 dollars per ton. Imagine the cost cuts if aluminum was to be recycled. What is the point of spending more and more money, when you can just recycle a material and save millions of dollars? Many of the economic issues are tied in with political issues. One of the reasons for this in the United States is because The United States economy is declining due to the war in Iraq. The solution of recycling metals is also a political advantage because at the moment the United States government is spending billions of dollars on the Iraq War causing extreme economic problems. However, with the recycling of aluminum it can save the United States billions of dollars thus helping the problems that United States is having in the economy. Aluminum postal and UPS trucks are extremely cost effective because they are extremely lightweight. If a vehicle is lightweight it uses less gas because there is less weight to be moved so less energy is being used. Therefore aluminum vehicles, save vast amounts of gasoline, saving money over a small period of time. In addition, because gas prices are high this is a big benefit for the postal services and other companies that use vehicles composed of aluminum. While market prices fluctuate, the recovery of metals normally is the largest source of revenue for material recovery facilities. This enhances the economics of recycling through several technological advancements. Aluminum cans, when recycled into new cans, require ninety-five percent less energy than making cans from raw resources. As a result of this less energy is used meaning less money is spent to make these cans. This is not only an economic benefit but an environmental benefit also. These facts alone prove that recycling metals can help the economy greatly and even solve political issues. Another way to take a closer and more magnified view of the global benefits of recycling metals is by recognizing the social effects of recycling and cultural issues of today. For example, the United States has a society that wastes a lot and recycles little. The U.S.A has approximately 301,139,947 people. This is not a great percentage of the world’s population. However, they waste the most amounts of resources and pollute the most. This is a cause of the United States having a mainly consumer lifestyle with out regarding the impacts of their actions. They also consume 3.816 trillion kWh per year, while also consuming 20.8 million bbl/day. This proves that is practically in the culture of countries such as the United States to waste. One of the reasons they use this amount of electricity and oil is because they produce several goods. If they created and bought more cars that were composed of recycled metals and lightweight metals they would reduce these consumption amounts greatly because not only will their be less gas consumption but there will be less electricity consumption to manufacture these cars. Yet to do this, the U.S. must change its culture and society almost completely. It seems like a hard goal to reach, but it is actually not as difficult as it seems and hopefully will be in the near future. Some other social benefits of recycling metals are minimizing waste landfills which then reduces odors and congestion associated with transporting disposable wastes, and generating employment for collection and recycling activities. Which at this point is necessary for the overall well being of the world or “sustainable development”.

Advantages:

1. Recycling helps to limit the amount of glass, paper and plastic that must be produced. This will end with less garbage in landfills because it's being reused. Currently, 100% of all refuse is recycled.

2. Adds jobs to the economy;

3. Slows the consuming of Natural Resources;

4. Makes people environmentally aware;

5. Promotes scientific advancements in recyclable and biodegradable materials;

6. Preserving the environment.

Disadvantages:

1.Separate factories must be set up for the recycling of materials

2. Pollutants produced by. the recycling process itself, including chemical stews when breaking down different products

3. Only the recycling of aluminum really makes any money. Reclaiming metals is feasible an.d fairly easy, whereas plastics and paper are expensive, wasteful and overly difficult

4. Creation of low-quality jobs. Jobs include sifting through garbage to separate it, dealing with the toxins from the breakdown process, and other manual-intensive labor tasks
